- count the number of times appropriate behavior used by students in a group. Do not count too many different behaviors at one time. For example, you might just keep track of who talks in a group to get a participation pattern. Sample behaviors are contributes ideas, asks questions, expresses feelings, expresses support for ideas, encouraging other members, checking for understanding, giving directions.
Intervening
- When collaborating problems arise suggest more effective procedures and behaviors
- Can turn the problem back onto the group to solve. Have members set aside the task. point out the problem, and lead a discussion on solutions.
- While students are working, occasionally ask a random group member on of the answers already agreed on.
- Turn students questions back on the group to solve

Monitoring Structures
- When requesting a product/project/assignment from a group, all members must sign. Which infers each member agrees with it and can defend its content. A variation is that no group member receives credit for doing homework until all group members have handed in the assignment.
- Randomly selecting a worksheet, report, or theme on one group member. This means that all members' work is corrected by the group.
- Keep group progress chart. Could be a graph.
- The teacher establishes individual levels of mastery that each group member must achieve inorder for the group as a whole to be successful
- The teacher establishes a minimal criterion that all group members must achieve in order for the group to be successful. For example, 80% mastery
